Saving Money By Home Brewing

posted on November 30, 2008 in Home Brew

One of the main reasons many people have started brewing beer at home is to save money. Store-bought beer can be expensive. The ingredients for home brewing are comparatively inexpensive. You can typically save about 50% by brewing your own beer rather than buying it from a store.

The main expense involved in home brewing is the money needed for the equipment. This equipment will be used many times over, so it will actually pay for itself over time. There are many home beer-making kits that are now available on the market. These include all the items you need in order to start brewing beer immediately.

A little advance investigation and knowledge about the brewing process will help you choose the best equipment for your needs. You can then purchase the kit or equipment that is suited to the way you want to use it. Keep in mind the amount of brewing you intend to do. Then, purchase the least expensive kit that contains all the items you will need.

Once you have purchased the brewing equipment the only ongoing cost will be for ingredients. The ingredients needed will vary from batch to batch, depending on the type of beer you want to produce and the recipe you are using. If you plan to continue to make beer you can buy the ingredients in bulk, which will further reduce the price. Discount and bulk ingredients are readily available either locally or through the Internet.

Bottles and bottle caps are needed for each batch of beer. These can be purchased in cases and can be relatively inexpensive. Further, once you have a good supply of bottles you will be able to start reusing your bottles. You will need to re-sterilize them right before you bottle the beer. A good bottle brush is all that is needed, along with a good sterilizing agent. Plain household bleach can be used as a good sanitizer.

Basically, the more beer you brew the more money you will be able to save. As you brew batches of beer the cost for the brewing equipment will be spread out further. Eventually, the money you save on buying ready-made beer will be greater than the cost of brewing your own.
